in memory of hinoki

A carefully nurtured hinoki forest in the Takeo (Hashimoto City, Wakayama Prefecture) was cut down due to a landslide, and the local people kindly gave the logs to me. A local told me that he witnessed those hinoki being planted about 55 to 60 years ago. I counted the age rings and found that the trees were born around 1966. I took the smaller pieces and shaved them from the core to the boundary between the heartwood and sapwood to make a book shape, and printed the years which belonged to removed sections on paper instead. Employing traditional papermaking techniques, I made cover papers from the bark and endpapers from the cambium layers to bind the hinoki books.
