※ bag

  • 米袋

This collection is a recycled product from used rice bags. The paper bags are used to transport the rice from farms to the mill, after which they are refilled and no longer needed. 30 kg of rice is carried in a bag, which is made of three layers of slightly shrunken, durable kraft paper.

In the past, there was a paper garment called a kamiko (紙子). Kamiko is made of Japanese kozo paper, which is coated with konnyaku and persimmon tannin to make it more durable and less likely to tear when wet. Applying this technique to the rice bags that were destined to be discarded, they were turned into bags for daily uses.

The body of the bag is trimmed into a square for ease of use, and the originally attached paper string is separated into the section of the handle for reinforcement. ※ is called “rice mark” in Japan and is a commonly used punctuation mark. Isamu Hazama used this mark as a visual element, reacting the circles black using an iron-mordant technique with tannin from persimmon. He also used local rice straw for the line elements, symbolizing the celebration of the rice harvest.
