linear (like) bamboo charcoal
Bamboo charcoal is known for its functional properties like deodorizing and humidity control. It can also be incorporated into daily life in many ways—such as making mineral water at home or cooking rice with it—though I’ll skip the details here. This work began with the theme of “drawing lines in the air,” using such bamboo charcoal.
Observing bamboo charcoal reveals its rich expressions—some pieces curve gently, others remain straight—evoking lines drawn with ink on Japanese paper. Thus, much like creating a mobile, I composed the pieces while seeking its center of gravity, yet with the freedom of spontaneous drawing. Some pieces crumbled at the slightest touch, even when pierced with an extremely fine hole. This fragility only heightened the resemblance to a single line drawn on paper, creating a tense expression absent in raw wood. Though seemingly fragile enough to break from minor impacts, the bamboo charcoal pieces and wire, positioned close enough to almost touch, occasionally produce beautiful sounds. (W. I.)
