twigtheque

In satoyama, a variety of trees grow which are necessary for daily lives. From sakaki for offerings on the shinto altar and shikimi (Japanese star anise) for Buddhist rituals, to oak for farming tools, nikki for children’s snacks, sugi and hinoki for building materials, etc., all trees can be found in relation to daily life and come in a variety of colors, shapes, and textures. This work is a collection of twigs collected from the mountains to study woods and then mounted in a box or a frame. The frames are designed to be joined in a way that gives them a certain strength*¹, so they can also function as side tables and the like.

*¹ When a force test was conducted, it broke at about 260 kgf. This result is expected to vary depending on the species of tree and the shape of the branches.
