The ginkgo tree, which shares its ginkgo nut (Ginkgo biloba) every year around autumn, is commonly found in satoyama. It is white and soft as timber and grows straight into a large diameter tree. The softness of the ginkgo tree is gentle to knives, so they were often cut into round slices and used as chopping boards in the olden days. Ginkgo is also considered to be ideal as a drying board for kozo paper, as it has a fine texture with little stain. Each of these examples make good use of the characteristics of the ginkgo tree. Gingko trees must have been valued for a long time as they grow into large diameter trees. If they grow too large near people’s residences, the leaves fall and the smell of gingko nuts can be troublesome.
